AWA
“Member in Good Standing”
The
purpose of these guidelines is to clarify any misunderstandings
you may have about what is required of AWA members, according
to our constitution. Constitutions and by-laws will be
available by the mailboxes for your reference. The following
is a section of our by-laws regarding Member in Good Standing.
Article
II, Section 1, E. member in Good standing Status.
1. To attain member in good standing status
a. Dues must be paid by the third meeting
b. A member will be expected to attend all meetings unless
a proper excuse is given to the secretary prior to the
meeting (See Article VI, Section 1, A, 4-5). Three unexcused
meeting absences will result in annulment of member in
good standing status and deactivation from the Association
pending a vote by the members.
c. A member will also be expected to attend all mandatory
events that are determined by the executive team, and
failure to do so will result in annulment of member in
good standing status.
1) As with regular AWA meeting, three unexcused mandatory
events constitutes this annulment.
Article
VI, Section 1, A.
4. In the event of a conflict, the member must
contact the Secretary before the meeting. Such conflicts
include previously scheduled school and family events
and class conflict.
5. In the event of an emergency conflict, death or illness,
a verbal excuse must be given to the Secretary before
the meeting.
Additional
notes:
• All regular AWA meetings are considered
mandatory events.
• In the event of a non-emergency conflict, a written
explanation of your absence must be submitted to the Secretary.
• Verbal excuses will only be accepted in the event
of emergencies.
• Work and other meetings do not constitute as excused
absences.
• If members are not able to be active in the organization
due to class schedules, internships, studying abroad or
other reasons, they may petition the organization for
inactive status. Upon approval, members may be inactive
for one semester.
So
what happens if I have unexcused absences from mandatory
events?
1. After one unexcused absence: no action will
be taken.
2. After your second unexcused absence, you will be sent
a letter notifying you that one more unexcused absence
will cause your member in good standing status to be annulled
as well as your deactivation from the organization, pending
a vote by the membership (Article II, Section 1, E, 1.,
c.)
3. After your third unexcused absence, your member in
good standing status is annulled and the organization
will vote whether to deactivate your membership.
What
are my options if I have two unexcused absences?
1. Come to all remaining mandatory events through
the end of the current semester.
2. Petition the membership for inactive status by sending
a letter to the Secretary if you have not already been
inactive for a previous semester. This requires approval
by the membership.
3. Petition the membership for Alumni status by sending
a letter to the Secretary if you are going to be graduating
at the end of the current semester. This requires approval
by the membership.
4. Notify the membership of your deactivation in a letter
to the Secretary.
